【趣 旨】
1993年に琵琶湖で開催したBITEX(Biwako Trasnport Experiment)から３０年の歳月がたった。当時、BITEX は台風などの強風によって湖で引き起こされる生物化学反応に焦点を当てていた。そして、今、地球は猛烈な気象変動を正面から受けている。琵琶湖も例外ではない。例えば、過去30年間にわたる湖底水温の上昇によって、固有種を中心とした生態系は大きく変化してきている。このような事態を想定して、私たちは2008年にNPO法人びわ湖トラストを設立し、環境異変に立ち向かうジュニア世代を育成してきた。そして今回、30周年を機にBITEX to CITEXと銘打って国際シンポジウムを開催することとした。CITEXとは、Citizen-oriented Information Transfer from Expertsの略である。この会議は、従来の専門家による研究に留まらず、次世代の科学者たちが市民目線でこの難局を乗り越えるための礎となることを期待している。
[Objective]
Thirty years have passed since BITEX (Biwako Trasnport Experiment) was held in Lake Biwa in 1993. At that time, BITEX focused on biochemical reactions triggered in lakes by typhoons and other strong winds. Now, the earth is facing severe climatic changes. Lake Biwa is no exception. For example, water temperature around the lake bottom raised over the past 30 years, and has drastically changed its ecosystem, especially that of its endemic species. In anticipation of such a situation, we established the non-profit organization “Biwako Trust” in 2008 to develop the human resources, especially young generation who will confront severe environmental changes in the future. CITEX stands for Citizen-Oriented Information Transfer from Experts. We hope that this conference will serve as a cornerstone for the next generation of scientists to overcome this difficult situation from a citizen’s perspective, and not just the traditional research by experts.
